After my novel, The Evolution of Sarah was published, I felt like I hadn’t finished with the character of Colin, Sarah’s cousin. I wanted to take him a little further forward in his life and to go a little deeper into his back story.

Colin pitched his jacket over the polished oak stair rail and keeping his keys uncharacteristically silent in his hands, he stood in the doorway of the living room. As always at these moments, a smile started somewhere in the area of his socks and worked its way up over his belt buckle to land on his lips. It’s true that there was, of late, quite a slice of real estate over the belt buckle area and that Friday evenings like these were becoming rare-his daughters all at home. But tonight at 6 p.m., there they were, sitting on the floor around the coffee table, all present and ready for dinner. He had walked in as daughter number two, Elaine, was showing the photographs of her trip to Arras in northern France.
